Gas prices are skyrocketing and there is nothing we can do. Or is there? Driving experts say that we can increase our gas mileage by 10-30 percent if we just adjust our driving behavior and become smarter drivers.

So on a recent roadtrip along the breathtaking Californian coast I decided to follow all the wise recommendations to see how much further I could drive on one full tank of gas (13.2 gallons) and the result really blew my mind.

By simply slowing down to below 65 mph, accelerate and brake gentler, and using the cruise control I extended my mileage with 30 percent and cut my gas expenses with 25 percent. Now that’s way better than any 2-3 percent gas cash back card, right.

My ten-year old surf mobile is now getting 40+ miles per gallon (mpg) and fueled by the recent success I intend to push this to 45 mpg by turning off the AC (the sea breeze will work just fine), travel lighter with less, and keeping the surfboard inside the car instead of on the roof rack on my next coastal road trip adventure.

The positive trade off for slowing down is safer driving behavior, lower CO2 emissions and 25 percent cheaper gas. And the extra time it takes to reach my destination pays off in a more mindful lifestyle, less stressful and more relaxing drive, and feeling more rested on arrival to enjoy both journey and destination.

Now imagine if everyone followed this excellent advice of easing up on the pedal and driving smarter. Pretty impactful, right.
